What is it?


Addiction is a chronic condition characterized by compulsive engagement in a behavior or substance use despite its negative consequences. It affects the brain’s reward system, making it difficult to stop without intervention. Addiction is not just a lack of willpower—it is a complex condition that requires proper understanding and support.


Prevalence and statistics?


  • 1 in 10 people struggle with some form of addiction.

  • Over 35 million people worldwide suffer from substance use disorders, yet only a small percentage receive treatment.

  • Behavioral addictions like gambling and internet addiction are rising, impacting mental health and daily life.

  • Addiction increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal.


How to identify?


  1. Emotional signs -


    • Strong cravings or urges to engage in the addictive behavior.

    • Mood swings, anxiety, or irritability when unable to access the substance or activity.

    • Guilt, shame, or hiding behaviors from loved ones.


  2. Physical signs -


    • Withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, headaches, or tremors.

    • Sleep disturbances, weight changes, or neglect of personal hygiene.

    • Increased tolerance, needing more to feel the same effect.


  3. Cognitive signs -


    • Obsessive thoughts about the substance or behavior.

    • Poor concentration and decision-making.

    • Justifying or rationalizing harmful behaviors.


  4. Behavioral signs -


    • Loss of interest in hobbies or responsibilities.

    • Risk-taking behaviors to sustain the addiction.

    • Lying, secrecy, or social withdrawal.


Different forms of addiction?


  1. Drug/ substances -


    • Alcohol - Persistent drinking despite negative consequences.

    • Nicotine - Dependence on tobacco or vaping products.

    • Caffeine - Excessive consumption leading to withdrawal symptoms.

    • Prescription drugs - Misuse of prescribed opioids, stimulants, sedatives.

    • Illegal street drugs - Consumption of cannabis, LSD, MDMA, heroin, cocaine.

    • Inhalants - In the form of paint thinners, glue, whitener liquid, household chemicals.


  2. Behavioral addiction -


    • Shopping – Uncontrollable spending leading to financial strain.

    • Food Addiction – Emotional dependence on eating, often leading to binge eating.

    • Gambling – Uncontrollable urge to gamble despite financial losses.

    • Gaming – Excessive video game use interfering with daily life.

    • Internet & Social Media – Compulsive browsing, social media scrolling, or online engagement.

    • Sex & Pornography – Excessive sexual behavior impacting relationships and responsibilities.

    • Work Addiction (Workaholism) – An uncontrollable need to work, leading to burnout and stress.
