Panic. When fear strikes without warning.

What is it?


Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks, which are, sudden episodes of intense fear and discomfort that peak within minutes. These attacks often occur without warning and may lead to persistent worry about future episodes, causing avoidance behaviors and significant distress and restriction in daily life. Some people experience them as extremely anxious states.



Prevalence and statistics?


• 2.5% of adult population suffer at some point of life.

• Women are 2.5x times more affected than men.

• 40% adult cases notice their problem before age 20 years.

• Around 12% of population below 18 years of age are affected.

• 5% of adolescents may experience panic disorder, impacting school performance and social interactions.

• More than 50% alcohol and other drugs users report panic attacks. With many continuing to use the substances as self medication.


How to identify?


  1. Physical signs - Racing heart, palpitation, difficulty in breathing and swallowing, uneasiness in chest and stomach, excess sweating, muscle tension, numbness and tingling sensations in limbs, giddiness

  2. Emotional signs - Intense fear, ear of losing control or going crazy, fear of not being able to escape from a situation.

  3. Avoidance behaviors - Constant worry about future attacks, avoiding places, situations, or activities that may trigger an attack, change in daily routine to prevent perceived threats
