What is it?

Memory issues refer to difficulty in storing, retaining, or recalling information. They can affect short-term, long-term, or working memory. Memory difficulties can impact daily functioning, learning, relationships, and emotional well-being.


Prevalence and statistics

  • Mild memory lapses are common and increase with age—affecting up to 40% of adults over 60.

  • Around 1 in 9 adults aged 65 and older experience memory loss severe enough to interfere with daily life.

  • Mental health issues are 3 to 4 times more in patients suffering from memory issues

  • >30% suffer from depression, which further adds to patients burden


How to identify?


Emotional signs –

• Frustration or embarrassment over forgetfulness

• Anxiety about declining mental sharpness

• Mood changes due to confusion or perceived failure


Physical signs –

• Poor sleep, fatigue, or sluggishness affecting memory

• Difficulty completing familiar tasks due to lapses

• Slower information processing


Behavioural signs –

• Frequently losing items or missing appointments

• Repeating questions or stories

• Avoiding mentally demanding tasks


Cognitive signs –

• Forgetting names, dates, or recent conversations

• Difficulty concentrating or learning new things

• Confusion about time, place, or sequences


Common Causes of Memory Issues:

  • Psychiatry Conditions  - Stress, anxiety, depression, poor sleep, substance use

  • Medical Conditions – Head injury, seizures, thyroid issues, vitamin deficiencies, infections, autoimmune condition

  • Neurodegenerative Disorders – Alzheimer's disease, post stoke, Parkinson’s disease

  • Age-related Decline – Mild cognitive changes common with aging
