What is it?

Headaches are a common condition characterized by pain or discomfort in the head or neck region. They can range from mild to severe and may start suddenly or have long history. There are various types of headaches, including tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches, each with distinct causes, symptoms, and treatment approaches.

Prevalence and statistics

  • Nearly 50% of adults experience headaches annually.

  • Migraines affect about 12% of the population, particularly women (3 times more likely than men).

  • Tension-type headaches are the most common, affecting up to 78% of people at some point in their lives.

  • Cluster headaches, though rarer, affect about 0.1% of the population, primarily men.

  • Chronic headaches affect 4% of adults, significantly impacting daily functioning.

  • In chronic patients 40% think of suicide and 10% attempt suicide
