Anxiety. A silent storm.

Updated: May 17

What is it?

Anxiety is the anticipation of future danger, often excessive and disproportionate to the actual threat, and may be associated with unrealistic fears. It can be a normal reaction to challenging situations, but when persistent, overwhelming, or interfering with daily life, it may indicate an anxiety disorder requiring professional support.

Statistics and prevalence?

1 in 5 adults experience anxiety, leading to irritability, burnout, social withdrawal, and substance use.

• Affects 10% to 20% of children and adolescents.

Up to 50% of alcohol users experience anxiety, with many continuing to drink primarily to cope with anxiety rather than for recreation.

• Around 10% of preschoolers experience anxiety, it being the major reason for school refusal and future social difficulties.
